Obituary

Ned Eugene Batts, Jr. born to Ned and Mamie Jones Batts on June 28, 1948 departed this earthly
journey at ECU Health Greenville on Friday, March 17, 2023 at 330AM with his wife and daughter
Michelle at his bedside.
Ned was born and reared in the Iron City/Donalsonville, Georgia area by his grandparents, James
“Jim” and Lilla Hampton Batts. He attended school at Seminole County Training School in
Donalsonville, Georgia where he played football and sang in the glee club. He graduated Seminole
County Training School on May 27, 1966. After graduation, he moved to Newark, New Jersey where
he worked for the Otis Elevator Company until he was drafted into the US Army in October 1967. He
served in Korea for the US Army until he was honorably discharged. He returned to New Jersey upon
discharge but later moved to Washington, NC where he made his home. Always a man of service, he
started a cab business called Batts Cab. He transported people to medical appointments mostly in the
Raleigh Durham area for social services. Ned was a skilled cook and enjoyed feeding people. Hosting a
fish fry or a crab boil were a few of his specialties.
Ned was a faithful member of St. John Church of Christ and sung in the Male Chorus and the Gospel
Choir until his health failed. He served as Vice Present of the Male Chorus. He is a Hiram Lodge #11
P.H.A. Mason and in the early years worked with the Knights of Pythagoras helping to train young
men. Ned was also an active legionnaire with the American Legion Post 263. He was an avid and
faithful Dallas Cowboy fan.
In 2012, Ned married his faithful companion, Mary. They shared a life of service to each other, their
family, community and church.
Ned is predeceased by his parents, Ned E Batts, Sr. and Mamie Jones Batts; his grandparents that
reared him, James and Lilla Hampton Batts; four of his siblings, Robert, Alice, Lucille and James; one
son, Sanford Eugene Battle and one grandson, Christopher.
Ned leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Mary Carman Batts; nine children, Terrence Batts (Halan)
of Fort Hood, Texas; Michelle Rawls (Jordan) of Washington, NC; Iyeisa Simmons (Charles) of
Greenville, NC; Appifany Quran (Rashaud) of Norfolk, VA; Malcolm Smith of Houston, TX; Rahaeem
Shelton of Winston Salem, NC; Sahaeem Shelton of Chocowinity, NC; Ned Micah Batts (Tierny) of
Chattanooga, TN; and Jasmine Moore of Fayetteville, NC. He has three brothers, Alexander Batts of
Greenville, NC; Shelmon Batts (Emma) of Macon, GA and Randy Batts of Upper Marlboro, MD. Ned
leaves three sisters, Cloritta Greggs (Curtis) of Washington, NC; Hattie Spears (Charles) of Washington,
NC and Harriett Batts of Tampa, FL. His mother in law, Lorraine Carman of Hallandale Beach FL; three
sisters-in-law Lola Wanzer of Hallandale Beach FL; Shelby Bussey of Greenville, NC and Tammy
Sherrod of Charlotte, NC; three brothers-in-law, Charles Carman Jr of Fort Lauderdale, FL; Curtis
Carman and Gordon Carman of Hallandale Beach, FL.
Ned leaves one aunt, Mrs. Katie Young (Robert) of Irving, TX; twelve grandchildren, seven great grand
children, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A special acknowledgement to his cousins for
their never-ending support: the children of Theresa Perry, Elaine Baker, Eunice Harris, and Ola V
Hampton. Lastly, a very special acknowledgement to Donald R. Keyes, Ben Bond and Lewis Smallwood
for all their assistance and faithfulness during his brief illness.
