Sister Mattie Smart was born on Melrose Plantation in Thomas County to the late William Henry Mitchell Sr. and Lillia Bell Mitchell. She joined Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully for over 70 years.
Sister Smart attended Sunday school, Bible study, and worship service. She served as the secretary of Thomas and Grady County singing convention, Prince Hall Grand Chapter, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a life member of Rebecca Chapter 32. Mrs. Mattie was a 1960 graduate of Magnolia High School. She was well loved by the people who knew her.
She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Chester L. Smart Sr. To this union was born six sons. She leaves to cherish her memories her sons and their wives: Chester Smart (Pamela) of Minoa, IL, Anthony Smart (Kimberly) of Fortson, GA, Timothy Smart (Lola Meredow) of Temecula, CA, Jeffery Smart (Keziah) of Riverview, FL, Stevie Mack (Sharita), and Sedrick Mack of Thomasville, GA.
Sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Devoted close cousin Caroline Coachman. Lauretta Hadley, Mom's little sister who was faithful from start to finish, Sister Shirley Wilkins who was Mom's ride to church when she was able to go, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mattie was preceded in death by Sisters: Geneva Harris and Coreen Jefferson, and Brothers: William Henry Mitchell Jr., Freddie, Lawrence, and Emmit Mitchell. She has two living sisters-in-law, Alice Mitchell and Helen Smart, and two living brothers-in-law, Ricky and Buford Smart.
