Katherine Frances (Tillman) Mitchell

Katherine Frances Tillman was born October 16, 1945, from the second marriage of her mother, Earie Washington Chester, to Dennis Tillman of Thomasville, Georgia.  Theresa Mae Tillman, her older sister, passed away in 1985. Their father engendered another daughter, Brenda Tillman. Katherine also had other siblings from her mother’s first marriage to Wilson Chester, Sr., Namely, Wilson Chester, Jr. (deceased), Elvert Chester (deceased), and Lillian Chester. Theresa and she also shared close family ties with her older siblings and their family siblings: Lawrence Chester, Sr., and Deloris Chester Johnson.

Mrs. Mitchell grew up in Thomasville and attended New Jerusalem Church. Katherine also attended Second Presbyterian Church’s Summer Bible School programs under Rev. and Mrs. R. D. Roulhac. She attended Douglass High School and soon met Carlton Mitchell, Jr., of Boston, Georgia, whom she married December 16,1966.

To this union, two children were born: Regina (deceased) and Carlton Mitchell III. They later moved from Thomasville to Detroit, Michigan. However, following the deaths of several close family members, including her husband, and later, her father, she and her son moved back to Thomasville in 1999.

On March 13, 2023, God called Katherine Mitchell to eternal rest at 3:28 AM at Harborview Nursing Home in Thomasville, Georgia.  She had been a patient there since October 2022. Mrs. Mitchell was seventy-seven years old.

Left to cherish her memories are: her son, Carlton Mitchell III; two sisters, Lillian Chester and Brenda Tillman Ivey Washington (Jeffery) of Thomasville; two special family siblings, Lawrence Chester, Sr. (Opal) of Royal Palm Beach, FL, and Deloris Chester Johnson of Lakeland, FL; sisters-in-law, Juanita W. Chester of Thomasville and Mary Louise Chester of Grove City, OH; nieces, Shanique Chester of Orange, CA; Cheryl Chester Green of Thomasville, and Angela “Faye” Williams Maradle (Torrey) of Boston, GA; nephews, Myron Chester, Derrick Williams, and Juan Williams of Detroit, MI; beloved cousins, Jewel Tillman Hand of Trenton, NJ, Julia Bryant Diggs of Thomasville, Johnnie Pearl Bryant Gibson of Thomasville, Patricia Bryant Nash of Tallahassee, FL, Torrii Young Peoples of Tallahassee, FL, Andrea Suckie (Marcus) of Thomasville, J.T. Tillman (Lessie) of Thomasville; and a host of great nephews, nieces, other cousins, and family friends.
