“Reflections of a Loving Legacy”
Julia Mae Carr Hayward was born on October 6, 1948, to the late Frank Carr Sr. and late Rosetta Armster Carr in Thomas County, Georgia.
She joined Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She was in the choir for many years. She served as a choir secretary, church secretary, church clerk, Deaconess and helped in many other areas as needed. She loved her Mt. Moriah Church family.
She was a hardworking, dedicated, and faithful member. She attended services until her health declined. She always instilled in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren about loving the Lord. Julia was joined in matrimony to the love of her life Eddie D. Hayward Sr. on January 24, 1967. To this union, two children were born Deidra and Eddie Jr.
Julia was highly intelligent. She had the drive, determination, and faith to achieve any goals she set her sites on. She attended Magnolia High School and graduated in the class of 1966 as a Salutatorian. She attended Spellman College right after high school in 1966. She attended Thomas Area Technical School, graduating December 18, 1970, in Practical Nursing. She graduated from Valdosta State College in June 1983, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
Julia was employed at Southwestern State Hospital in which she held several positions. Working on her plan to become a Registered Nurse. She started as a Health Service Technician, and next became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She always worked with her co-workers on a team player basis. No job was too big or small. Including the sacrifice of leaving her children with their father or other family members and not seeing them for days at a time. She reached the goal of becoming a Registered Nurse Manager. While supervising others she also performed any job needed. During her years of working at Southwestern, she received prestigious awards. One of many, was the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Service in the state of Georgia on September 29, 1984, at the State Capital in Atlanta. She didn’t only fulfill dreams and goals for herself, as she stated, “It was always my father’s dream that I became a Registered Nurse.”
Julia didn’t only practice her nursing at Southwestern. She worked Part-time at the Crisis Stabilization Unit. She also practiced her nursing throughout the Mt. Moriah Community and wherever she was needed.
Julia was the Matron of the International F. & A. M. Masons and Order of the Eastern Stars. She received her 20-year service award for giving diligent, honorable, and unselfish services. She was also a NAACP supporter.
One great attribute of Julia’s life is that she was the most caring and loving person. She helped and gave to anyone in need. Whether she knew the people or not, she would always extend a helping hand.
