Johnny Payne led a life deeply rooted in both community and hard work. Born in Metcalf, Georgia, on February 10, 1956, to the late Mamie and Bill Payne. He grew up amidst a large family of nine siblings, claiming the sixth spot. His formative years were split between Metcalf and Thomasville, where he received his education.

After completing school, Johnny ventured south to Miami, Florida where he settled for the rest of his life. There, he dedicated himself to the construction industry, specializing as a roofer—a profession he pursued throughout his adult life. Johnny’s expertise in roofing and construction played a crucial role in the development of numerous homes and subdivisions across Dade County. His knowledge ensured that the structures were built to high standards of quality and durability, contributing to the overall safety and longevity of the communities he helped to construct.

Beyond his work, Johnny was known for his vibrant personality and extensive social circle. He cherished time spent with his many friends, relishing in social gatherings after long days of labor and on weekends.

On May 4th, at the age of 68, Johnny’s journey on this earth came to a close at Hialeah Hospital in Miami, Florida where he peacefully transitioned leaving behind memories cherished by all those who knew him.

He leaves to cherish his memory, three sisters, Barbara Payne, Gladys Shotwell, and Berlinda (Terry) Frazier of Thomasville, Georgia; three brothers, Charlie Powell, Jr., Albert “Wirt” Payne, and Kenneth Payne of Thomasville, Georgia; Aunts Alean Ross of Atlanta, Georgia, Teresa Ross of Washington, D.C., and Peggy Ross of Cocoa Beach, Florida. He also leaves a host of devoted nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
